subaquatic realm where light, scent, glass, and sound merge to form an environment that is at once fragile, haunting, and resilient. At the heart of the work is Medusa: a stage in the jellyfish’s life cycle as well as the mythic figure. From a goddess of power to a monstrous symbol rewritten by patriarchal voices, Medusa’s evolution echoes the ways bodies, ecosystems, and stories adapt, endure, and reclaim power. By entwining mythology with marine science, Poblador invites Artpace visitors to consider how transformation lies at the core of survival. The gallery is bathed in a deep celestial blue, a color chosen to echo the vast skies of Texas and to evoke the sensation of plunging into oceanic darkness. Within this immersive atmosphere, nine glass sculptures stand and hang as if suspended in water, reminiscent of coral reefs and jellyfish. These works, made through lampworking, bear extraordinary detail despite their small scale. As light transforms them, they embody the monstrous feminine, a quiet force that grows larger than life through shadowy projection. Sound work by composer Ben Richter adds another layer, resonating with tones derived from instruments shaped to accompany the glass forms, amplifying the sensation of inhabiting a marine environment. Equally transformative are the scents that permeate the exhibition, developed in collaboration with perfumer and artist M. Dougherty. Together, they evoke both ecological devastation and the persistence of life. The first impression, Oil Slick, rises with metallic sharpness, acrid smoke, and the faintly decaying sweetness of contaminated waters. It clings to the air as oil clings to the sea; its suffocating presence recalling disasters that have scarred marine habitats. Dead Coral follows with a mineralic, saline austerity. It’s acrid dryness mimics the earth’s bleaching reefs, a ghostly monument to climate change. Yet the experience culminates in Verde, a lush composition that carries the freshness of tropical florals and the brightness of citrus, mingling the imagined blossom of green mango flower with ylang-ylang and elemi. Their inclusion is not incidental: ylang-ylang, with its rich floral sweetness, and elemi, with its bright, resinous lift, have long held cultural and spiritual significance for Filipinos. In bringing these native materials into the gallery, Poblador anchors the work in Filipino identity, linking ecological resilience to cultural heritage and honoring the biodiversity of the Verde Island Passage, which scientists have called a global “hope spot.” Through these layered experiences, The Rise of Medusa reframes fragility as strength. What may seem small (a jellyfish polyp, a coral colony, a drop of oil, or a single flower) is revealed as essential, resilient, and interconnected with human survival. By placing myth beside science, and letting scent, shadow, and sound magnify delicate forms into monumental presences, Goldie Poblador’s Artpace installation calls visitors to recognize that in the Goldie Poblador and her collaborators construct an immersive exhibition that initially mourns the Verde Island Passage’s irreparable ecological devastation, caused by 2023 oil spills. Through different sensorial elements of sight, smell, and sound, Poblador and curator Erwin Romulo invite the viewer to trace the marine environment’s ecological stages as it recovers from the man-made catastrophe. Artist and perfumer M Dougherty creates three scents – Oil Slick, Dead Coral, and Verde – that accompany five sound sculptures by sound artist and composer Ben Richter, which are layered over by sound artist Arvin Nogueras aka Caliph8. Poblador’s practice centres on female archetypes such as the maiden but has recently shifted her focus to the monstrous feminine. This concept by Barbara Creed argues that female monsters in film reflect societal fears about women. Medusa’s petrifying regard, then, reflexively mirrors the patriarchy’s anxiety about itself. In 2023, the same year as the Verde Island Passage disaster, Poblador was punched in the face in a New York City subway as bystanders failed to help her. In the aftermath, the artist fell into what she describes as the ‘abyss’ and grappled with the monstrous side of her that might have always been there: crazy, angry, ugly – familiar accusations hurled at women. Building on Hélène Cixous’s “The Laugh of the Medusa,” which asserts women as complex and resilient beings laughing despite adversity, The Rise of the Medusa parallels Poblador’s own reparative journey. Medusa is the monstrous feminine emerging from the wreckage – a symbol of female loss, rage, resilience, and prosperity. The installation centres on a series of glass sculptures that merge the female body with invertebrate forms from the Verde Island Passage. The Rise of the Medusa is the second stage of Poblador’s Sea Anomaly series that first began in 2023 and has been shown in New York and Singapore. This body of work emerges from a studio residency at the Corning Museum of Glass in which Poblador&nbsp;studied the museum’s extensive collection of&nbsp;Leopold and Rudolf&nbsp;Blaschka&nbsp;invertebrate specimens.&nbsp;Poblador utilizes the duo’s specific glass-blowing technique to catalogue organic specimens, but complicates the practice’s colonializing standard of classification by fusing these creatures with sensual human forms. Here the artist also invokes Magwayen, the Philippine goddess of sea and death, as she becomes one with her ocean dwellers. This fusing further advocates for a shift from anthropocentric priorities that have wrought ecocide, towards a future informed by precolonial harmony with the earth. They made Medusa a monster. Poseidon, Athena, Perseus. Raped, mutated, beheaded. Medusa was once an Athenian priestess. But after Poseidon assaults her in her place of work and worship, it is not the male god that is punished but the female mortal. Athena turns Medusa into a terrifying Gorgon with serpentine hair and a petrifying look. But all the monster does is return one’s gaze. In The Rise of Medusa, Goldie Poblador constructs an immersive exhibition that mourns the Verde Island Passage’s irreparable ecological devastation, caused by 2023 oil spills. For this iteration at Olfactory Art Keller, Poblador creates new wall-bound sculptures based on rare manuscripts from the seventeenth to nineteenth-centuries that catalogue coral and sea dwelling invertebrates. The exhibition will be completely dark, with visitors invited to use flashlights that activate the bioluminescent sculptures and navigate through the space. With the additional sensorial elements of smell and sound, Poblador invites the viewer to the seafloor where they might trace the marine environment’s ecological stages as it recovers from the oil spill. With this reparative journey, Poblador finds a familiar trajectory of healing. She imagines Medusa as the monstrous feminine emerging from the wreckage – a symbol of female loss, rage, resilience, and prosperity. Artist and perfumer M Dougherty creates three scents – Oil Slick, Dead Coral, and Verde – that accompany three sound sculptures by sound artist and composer Ben Richter. The Rise of Medusa is the third stage of Poblador’s Sea Anomaly series that began in 2023 and has been shown in New York, Singapore, and the Philippines. This body of work emerged from a residency at the Oakspring Garden Foundation, during which the artist encountered a rare book that paired botanic illustrations with hopeful poetry. This coupling relates the natural world to a sense of optimism that the artist also finds in her family histories: Poblador’s paternal grandfather was a folk poet who made similar connections with the earth. Poblador contemplates the passing of knowledge between physical and oral mediums as they coalesce in her delicate sculptures that are an extension of the work Poblador began at the Corning Museum of Glass. There Poblador studied the museum’s extensive collection of Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka invertebrate specimens. The Blaschkas were a father and son duo of 19th century jewellers who developed a specific glass-blowing technique to catalogue organic specimens. Poblador’s practice centres on female archetypes such as the maiden, but recently her focus has shifted to the monstrous feminine. In 2013, Poblador was punched in the face in a New York City subway as bystanders failed to help her. In the aftermath, the artist fell into what she describes as the ‘abyss’ and grappled with the monstrous side of her that might have always been there: crazy, angry, ugly. In The Monstrous Feminine, Barbara Creed argues that female monsters in film reflect societal fears about women. Medusa’s petrifying regard, then, is like a mirror of patriarchy’s own anxiety about itself. Building on Hélène Cixous’s “The Laugh of the Medusa,” Poblador envisions herself, Magwayen, and women as resilient and complex beings, laughing in the face of it all.Text by Marv Recinto Advised by In Sea Anomaly, Goldie Poblador interprets the vulnerable and essential species of marine invertebrates from the Verde Island Passage in the Philippines. In 2023, two behemoth oil tankers spilled an estimated 870,000 liters of industrial oil into the passage, threatening the survival of its biodiverse marine life. By reimagining these species in glass, Poblador works toward harnessing the resilience and dark feminine power of the ocean, toeing the line between beauty and terror, arming herself with nature’s divine power. In her contention with neoimperialism and climate crisis, she invokes Magwayen, the Bisayan goddess of death and the ocean, discovering her sprawling anatomical forms, her bioluminescence. What lurks beneath the surface of the ocean man has laid waste to? punishment for acting on their desires and taking agency over their own bodies. In Philippine folklore, these cautionary tales have perpetuated the archetype of the submissive, virginal Filipina—her personhood contingent on her willingness to conform to the social mores of the time. Fertility Flowers is an interactive installation of glass, scent and video that interrogates the origins and mythologies of several flowers native to the artist’s home country, the Philippines. In the tale of the dama de noche (Cestrum nocturnum), a queen is unable to produce an heir, and in her desolation, becomes a night-blooming flower. Meanwhile, colonized West Indian women used the peacock flower (Caesalpina pulcherrima) as an abortifacient so they would not bear children into slavery. The cadena de amor (Antigonon leptopus), whose name translates to “chains of love,” came to represent the moral puritanism Filipino women were bound to during the Spanish era. Poblador follows a throughline from her earlier ecofeminist oeuvre, including Venus Freed (2015) and The Myth of the Ylang-ylang (2015), which showed how flowers such as the ylang-ylang (Cananga onorata) are taken from their countries of origin and appropriated through trade. In Fertility Flowers, she turns this lens towards reproduction as the crux of centuries’ worth of subjugation women have suffered at the hands of colonial and patriarchal powers. In her glass sculptures, figures of women emerge from fantastical, petaled forms as floral scents waft through the room. In the accompanying film, Poblador herself slips into the myths of these flowers to commune with the women at their center. Meanwhile, colonized West Indian women used the peacock flower (Caesalpina pulcherrima) as an abortifacient so they would not bear children into slavery. The cadena de amor (Antigonon leptopus), whose name translates to “chains of love,” came to represent the moral puritanism Filipino women were bound to during the Spanish era. Poblador follows a throughline from her earlier ecofeminist oeuvre, including Venus Freed (2015) and The Myth of the Ylang-ylang (2015), which showed how flowers such as the ylang-ylang (Cananga onorata) are taken from their countries of origin and appropriated through trade. In Fertility Flowers, she turns this lens towards reproduction as the crux of centuries’ worth of subjugation women have suffered at the hands of colonial and patriarchal powers. In her glass sculptures, figures of women emerge from fantastical, petaled forms as floral scents waft through the room. In the accompanying film, Poblador herself slips into the myths of these flowers to commune with the women at their center. It explores the intersection between feminism and the ecological crisis as it relates to the oppressive history against the body as told through the lens of her experience of immigrating from her native country, the Philippines. Kadena — a word that means “chains” in Filipino, has its root in the Spanish word cadena. This exhibition features sculptural interpretations of the Cadena de amor — a vine like plant with small pink flowers that is widespread in the Philippines and is also found in Southeast Asia, Mexico, Africa and the Caribbean islands. The Cadena de amor, is an invasive weed that destroys the endemic plants within its environment. However, it has been cultivated and shipped due to its decorative properties. Poblador explores the the politics of immigrant culture and patriarchy through exploring how plants and flowers from developing countries are appropriated through trade. Her work attempts to decolonize these histories through the retelling of them. The Cadena de Amor, is the plant’s Philippine name which is in Spanish— a language that exemplifies the colonial history of the Philippines and literally translates to “chains of love”.&nbsp; From 1934 to the 1960s, the flower was used as a symbol of the preservation of the imposed moral values of Filipino womanhood. Poblador’s work asks how these imposed values are rooted in colonialism and reflect the lack of agency that Filipino women have over their bodies, and how they are perceived in Western society. She explores this flower, as a visual and narrative symbol of decolonization and agency, and references the literal and symbolic chains imposed on Filipina/x women today. Kadena reflects on not just the chains against how the&nbsp; Filipina is perceived but also on the overarching oppressions against immigrant women and women of color.
